Wondering how flower preservation actually works? Here's a step-by-step look at the resin preservation process — from the morning after your wedding to the finished piece.

From Bouquet to Keepsake: How the Flower Preservation Process Works

Most brides who order flower preservation have a general sense of what happens — you send your flowers, we do something with them, and a keepsake arrives at your door a few months later. But the specifics of what actually happens between those two points are less well understood than you might expect.

That matters, because understanding the flower preservation process helps you appreciate what you receive. The 12-15 week timeline isn't a wait — it's a series of careful, time-sensitive steps that each have a direct impact on the quality of your finished piece. Here's exactly what happens at each one.

Before the Process Begins: Getting Your Flowers to Us

The preservation process technically starts before your flowers reach our studio — it starts the morning after your wedding. Flowers begin deteriorating the moment they're cut from their water source, and the condition they arrive in has a direct effect on how well they preserve.

Overnight shipping is strongly recommended, and our Bloom Box™ is designed specifically for this moment. It's a purpose-built overnight shipping kit with everything you need to pack your bouquet safely — insulated packaging, a prepaid overnight shipping label, and packing instructions — so your flowers arrive at our studio in the best possible condition. For a full breakdown of the timing and exactly what to do the morning after your wedding, our guide on when to preserve your wedding bouquet covers every step.

For St. Louis-area brides, local drop-off is also available at our studio — the simplest and safest option, since your flowers go directly from your hands into ours.

Step 1: Arrival and Intake

When your flowers arrive at our studio, we log them into our system and assess their condition. This is when we check the varieties and colors in your arrangement and confirm what products you've ordered.

It's worth noting what "assessing condition" actually means in practice. Browning at the edges, wilting, soft petals — these are all normal for flowers that have been held, carried, and loved through a wedding day, and we preserve them as they are. The flowers that were with you on your wedding day are the ones that belong in your keepsake, and we prioritize keeping that story intact.

We only reach out before proceeding when something more significant is present — mold, structural collapse, or deterioration that would prevent the flowers from holding up through the drying process. In those cases, we'd rather have a quick conversation upfront and explore your options than proceed and deliver a result that doesn't reflect what your flowers deserved.

Step 2: Drying

This is the most time-intensive stage of the entire flower preservation process, and it's one that cannot be rushed.

We use a silica sand drying method. Your flowers are carefully placed in silica sand, which draws moisture out of the petals gently and evenly — far more so than air drying, which allows moisture to escape unevenly and causes more significant color loss, petal collapse, and structural damage. Silica drying takes several weeks and must be done slowly to maintain the shape of each bloom.

This phase is also where most natural color change occurs. As flowers lose moisture, their pigments oxidize — reds deepen, whites warm to ivory, purples can shift toward mauve. This is a natural, unavoidable part of working with real organic material, not a flaw in the process. Our guide on why flowers change color during preservation explains the chemistry in detail if you'd like to understand it further.

Step 3: Selection

Once your flowers have fully dried, our design team reviews them and selects the best blooms for your chosen keepsake. "Best" means the flowers that preserved most successfully — strongest color retention, cleanest petal structure, best overall condition — combined with what will look most beautiful in the specific shape and depth of your chosen mold.

If you've left notes about specific flowers you'd like featured, or emailed us preferences, this is where that guidance is applied. And if your bouquet includes more flowers than your keepsakes require, remaining blooms in good condition may be added to our studio inventory, where they can supplement other orders when needed.

Step 4: Casting

Your selected flowers are arranged by hand inside the mold and cast in our proprietary PetalSafe™ resin. This is where the piece takes its final form.

Most casting resins generate significant heat during curing — a chemical reaction that can stress delicate petals, cause browning at the edges, and accelerate long-term yellowing. PetalSafe™ was formulated specifically for flower preservation, with a low-temperature curing profile designed to protect your blooms through the casting process. It's also UV-resistant, which slows the natural ambering that affects all resin over time.

Resin curing is not instant. Each pour requires time to set, and larger or more complex pieces may require multiple layers. This is another stage where patience produces a better result — pushing curing time shortens the quality of the final piece.

Small bubbles, minor flower movement within the resin, and subtle variations between pieces are natural characteristics of the casting process — not defects. Each keepsake is unique because the flowers inside it are unique. Our What to Expect page covers these natural variations in detail before you order.

Step 5: Finishing and Quality Review

Once cured, each piece goes through a finishing process — sanding, polishing, and a careful quality review before it's approved for shipping. This is where the raw cast becomes the clear, polished keepsake you'll display in your home.

Every piece is inspected before it leaves our studio. If something doesn't meet our standards, it doesn't ship.

Step 6: Return Shipping

Your finished keepsake is carefully packaged and shipped back to you. Return shipping is included free of charge on orders of $250 or more in preservation pieces — orders below that threshold are charged a flat $10 return shipping fee.

You'll receive a shipping notification with tracking information when your order is on its way.

How Long Does the Flower Preservation Process Take?

Our standard turnaround is 12-15 weeks from the date your flowers arrive at our studio — not from the date you placed your order. The clock starts when we physically receive your flowers.

Stage Approximate Time
Arrival and intake 1–2 days
Drying About 4 weeks
Selection and design 1–2 days
Casting and curing 2-3 weeks depending on piece complexity
Finishing and quality review Several days
Return shipping Based on your location

You'll receive email updates at key milestones throughout — when we receive your flowers, when drying is complete, when casting begins, and when your order ships. You can also check your order's status anytime on our order tracking page.

During peak wedding seasons — typically spring and fall — turnaround times may extend slightly beyond the average due to higher order volumes.

What You're Waiting For

Twelve weeks is a meaningful amount of time. It's worth understanding what fills it.

Silica drying alone takes weeks because pulling moisture out too quickly collapses petals and washes out color. Resin curing takes additional time because chemical reactions can't be rushed without compromising clarity. Finishing takes time because the difference between a piece that looks good and one that looks exceptional is in the details.

The turnaround time isn't a production backlog — it's the process itself. Every week of it is doing something to make your keepsake better than it would be if we moved faster. For more on how our timeline compares across the industry, our flower preservation turnaround time guide puts it in context.
